ERBIL,— The president of Iraq’s Kurdistan region said Wednesday that Iran admitted a missile strike that killed six security personnel on Tuesday was a mistake.
Six members of the Kurdistan region’s peshmerga forces were killed in a ballistic missile attack, the first deadly strike of this kind since the outbreak of the Middle East conflict.
Regional President Nechirvan Barzani told local media that Kurdish officials immediately contacted Tehran after the incident. Barzani said Iran acknowledged the attack as a mistake and promised to conduct a full investigation.
Barzani also expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a quick recovery to those injured.
He said, “It was truly a very tragic incident. They have also sent messages of sympathy and condolences to the Kurdistan Region. We are now awaiting the response of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the Kurdistan Region,” according to the Kurdistan presidency.
Iraqi Kurdistan has faced repeated aerial attacks since February 28, 2026, amid a broader regional conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
Monitoring by Rudaw shows that more than 450 drones and missiles have targeted Iraqi Kurdistan so far.
The attacks, carried out by Iran and allied Iraqi militia groups, have killed at least 14 people and wounded 85, marking one of the deadliest periods in the region in recent years.
Among those killed are six militants from the Peshmerga forces affiliated with the Barzani KDP party, six Kurdish fighters linked to Iranian Kurdish parties, one officer from the Kurdish Asayish security forces, and a French soldier who died on March 12, 2026.
