SANAA,— Israel’s military launched airstrikes on several locations in Yemen linked to the Iran-aligned Shiite Houthi movement, including Sanaa International Airport and three ports along the Red Sea coast, officials said Thursday.
According to the Israeli military, the strikes also hit power stations in Hezyaz and Ras Kanatib, as well as military facilities in the ports of Hodeidah, Salif, and Ras Kanatib.
The attacks come amid escalating tensions as the Houthis continue to launch drones and missiles toward Israel, describing their actions as solidarity with Arabs in Gaza.
Houthi-run Al Masirah TV confirmed Israeli strikes on the airport, Hodeidah, and a power station but provided no further details. The Houthi movement has yet to issue an official statement on the attacks.
Houthi missile and drone attacks have disrupted global shipping routes for over a year, prompting international companies to take longer and costlier routes. The disruptions have raised concerns about global inflation and supply chain stability.
Israel has directed its European diplomatic missions to advocate for the Houthis to be officially designated as a terrorist organization.
Meanwhile, the U.N. Security Council is set to meet on Monday to address the attacks, Israel’s U.N. Ambassador Danny Danon said.
The strikes follow a failed interception on Saturday when a missile launched from Yemen landed in the Tel Aviv-Jaffa area, injuring 14 people.
In July 2024, Israeli fighter jets carried out airstrikes on Houthi military positions near the port city of Hodeidah in Yemen. This marked the first such operation by Israel targeting the Houthis.
