JERUSALEM,— The Israeli military has retrieved the bodies of six hostages from the Khan Younis area in southern Gaza, according to official statements from both the military and the prime minister’s office on Tuesday.
The families of Yagev Buchshtab, Alexander Dancyg, Avraham Munder, Yoram Metzger, Nadav Popplewell, and Chaim Perry have been informed of the recovery.
The Hostages Families Forum, which represents the majority of the families of those taken hostage, welcomed the news but emphasized the urgent need for the Israeli government to finalize a deal to secure the release of the remaining captives.
“The return of the remaining 109 hostages hinges on reaching a negotiated agreement. The Israeli government, with the support of mediators, must make every effort to conclude the deal currently under discussion,” the organization urged.
Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken is in the Middle East this week, focusing on brokering a ceasefire and facilitating the return of hostages between Israel and Hamas.
The conflict traces back to October 7, 2023, when militants from Hamas, a group recognized as a terrorist organization by much of the international community, launched a devastating attack on southern Israeli communities and military bases.
The assault resulted in the deaths of over 1,200 people, marking one of the deadliest days in Israeli history. Initially, Hamas abducted 253 individuals, though many have since been killed, and some have been exchanged in various deals.
In retaliation for the October 7 attack, Israel launched a military operation aimed at dismantling Hamas, vowing to eliminate the group entirely. The Israeli government has described this operation as a decisive response to the deadliest Palestinian militant attack in the nation’s history.
Hamas is officially classified as a terrorist organization by countries including the United States, Canada, Egypt, the European Union, Israel, and Japan.
Reports from Gaza health officials, who are associated with Hamas, claim that over 40,000 Palestinians have been killed in the ongoing conflict. However, these figures are widely contested, with many believing the actual death toll is significantly lower due to the questionable reliability of the sources.
