DUHOK,— The Kurdistan Communist Party has elected a new leader. During a meeting held on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, the party’s Central Committee elected Abdul Rahman Faris, widely known as “Abu Karwan,” as secretary-general, according to officials present at the session.

Abu Karwan replaces Kawa Mahmoud as head of the party. At the same meeting, Hiwa Omar was named Deputy Secretary-General.

Kawa Mahmud had originally succeeded Kemal Şakir as secretary-general on October 27, 2017, following Şakir’s resignation.

The party also confirmed the election of five new members to its Political Bureau: Subhi Mahdi, Hogir Chato, Baba Ali, Ne’mat Halabjayi, and Rêber Amêdi, sources within the committee told us.

The 8th Congress of the Kurdistan Communist Party was held on June 22 in Duhok in Iraq’s Kurdistan Region, ahead of the leadership elections. The congress brought together members from across the region to review party policies and set the direction for upcoming years.

Abu Karwan, Abdul Rahman Faris Abdul Rahman, born in 1955 in Kufri, Garmyan, has held various leadership roles within the party. He served as head of the Central Military Bureau from 1993 to 2003 and is a long-time member of the Political Bureau.

He earned a diploma in agriculture from Zakho and later obtained a degree in Law and Politics from Dutch Freedom University in Kirkuk.

The Kurdistan branch of the Iraqi Communist Party was originally founded in 1945 during the first conference of the Iraqi Communist Party, which recognized Kurdish national identity and granted the branch autonomy in setting its policies and internal structure.
