NEW YORK CITY,— Zohran Mamdani, a Muslim and democratic socialist, won New York City’s mayoral race on Tuesday, making history as the city’s first Muslim mayor.

At 34, he will also be the youngest mayor in more than a century, the first mayor of South Asian heritage, and the first mayor born in Africa.

Mamdani’s victory represents a major milestone for the Democratic Party’s progressive wing. He defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa in a closely watched race that drew national attention.

His campaign focused on empowering working-class New Yorkers, expanding affordability, and challenging what he called a hostile Trump administration.

Analysts note that Mamdani now faces the difficult task of managing America’s largest city while pursuing ambitious policies that some critics have called unrealistic.

Speaking to supporters in Brooklyn, Mamdani emphasized the historic significance of his election. “I am young, I am Muslim, I am a democratic socialist, and I will not apologize for any of it,” he said.

He framed his win as a mandate for ordinary New Yorkers struggling with rising costs. “New York, tonight you have delivered a mandate for change. I will wake up every day determined to make this city better than it was the day before,” he told the crowd.

According to the city’s Board of Elections, more than 2 million residents voted in the mayoral contest, the largest turnout in over 50 years. With roughly 90% of ballots counted, Mamdani led Cuomo by approximately nine percentage points, signaling strong support across the city.

Mamdani’s rise reflects the growing influence of progressive candidates within the Democratic Party, showing that left-leaning platforms can energize voters even against centrist rivals. His victory also highlights increasing diversity in political leadership nationwide.

National Republicans, including U.S. President Donald Trump, reacted strongly to the result. Trump repeatedly warned that Mamdani’s election could lead to cuts in federal funding to New York City or even a federal takeover of city government, portraying him as a symbol of a more radical Democratic Party.

At his Brooklyn celebration, supporters cheered, waved city flags, and played music by Bad Bunny. Cuomo’s midtown Manhattan concession event was far more subdued.

The former governor cautioned that not all campaign promises could be fulfilled, noting, “Almost half of New Yorkers did not vote to support a government agenda that makes promises we know cannot be met.” He urged his supporters to respect the outcome and offered assistance to Mamdani.

Mamdani’s campaign emphasized affordability, housing, social programs, and grassroots organizing. His energy and direct engagement with voters contrasted sharply with Cuomo’s attempt at a political comeback following his resignation four years ago amid sexual harassment allegations, which he continues to deny.

Mamdani will also face ongoing pressure from Trump, who suggested the possibility of legal and political actions against him. Born in Uganda and raised in New York City, Mamdani became a U.S. citizen in 2018.

In his victory speech, he highlighted the city’s immigrant identity and the historic significance of his leadership. “New York is a city built by immigrants, powered by immigrants, and now led by an immigrant,” he said. “If anyone can show a nation misled by Donald Trump how to defeat him, it is this city.”

Trump acknowledged Mamdani’s win briefly on his social media platform Truth Social, posting, “…AND SO IT BEGINS!”

Mamdani’s election marks a historic moment for New York City, signaling both a generational and cultural shift in leadership. As the city’s first Muslim mayor, his victory is expected to increase representation and visibility for minority communities across the United States.
