TEHRAN,— Legendary Iranian singer Hossein Khajeh Amiri, widely known by his stage name Iraj, died Wednesday at age 94, Iranian media reported.
He had struggled with health problems over the past several months and had been hospitalized more than once before his death Wednesday, August 12, 2026, according to the reports.
Iraj ranked among the most prominent voices in Iranian classical music.
He was born in the Naghnes region on January 1, 1933, and spent more than 70 years working as an artist.
He was known as the “Pahlavan-e Avaz,” a title reflecting the central role he played in shaping traditional Iranian music and playback singing over the course of his seven-decade career.
He began learning Iranian vocal music at a very young age. He later studied classical music in Tehran under Abolhasan Saba, who was among those who helped open the way for Iraj to enter Iranian radio.
Iraj went on to take part extensively in the historic programs of Iranian radio, most notably “Golha,” working alongside many of the leading musicians and composers of that era.
He was not only a radio singer; his voice was also recorded for numerous Iranian films, particularly during the period when the country’s film industry was developing.
Iraj founded and owned Avaye Iraj, a music school in Tehran named after him. He was also widely popular in both Iranian Kurdistan (Rojhelat) and Iraqi Kurdistan (Bashur).
