BERLIN,— Germany has temporarily withdrawn part of its military personnel from Erbil in Iraqi Kurdistan due to rising tensions in the Middle East, a spokesperson for the German Defence Ministry told AFP on Thursday.
Several dozen German soldiers were moved from their base in Erbil, the capital of Iraq’s autonomous Kurdistan region.
The spokesperson said only the staff required to keep the camp functioning remain at the location.
The ministry did not identify the specific cause of the increased tensions. However, US President Donald Trump has ordered a significant deployment of American warships, aircraft and other military equipment to the region and has warned of possible action against Iran.
German forces are stationed in Erbil as part of an international mission focused on training Iraqi security forces.
The spokesperson said the decision to relocate some personnel was closely coordinated with multinational partners involved in the mission.
No further details were provided about the number of troops relocated or how long the temporary move would last.
