BERLIN,— A trial opened Tuesday in Germany for four men accused of organizing weapons caches across Europe on behalf of the Islamist Arab militant group Hamas, according to prosecutors.
The suspects are charged with locating and setting up weapons stockpiles to be used in potential attacks against Israeli and Jewish targets across Europe, prosecutors said when filing charges last year.
Authorities allege the weapons were moved throughout Europe in preparation for Hamas’ October 7, 2023, attack on Israel. That assault killed approximately 1,200 people, most of them civilians and children, and led to about 250 people being taken hostage.
The attack prompted Israel’s military response in Gaza, where more than 17,000 Hamas militants have been killed, according to Israeli figures.
German authorities said Hamas also considered attacking the Israeli Embassy in Berlin, locations near Tempelhof Airport in the capital, and the U.S. Ramstein Air Base.
The four men — identified under German privacy laws as Abdelhamid Al A., Mohamed B., Nazih R., and Ibrahim El-R. — were arrested in December 2023. Prosecutors say all held key positions within Hamas.
Investigators claim the suspects established a weapons depot in Bulgaria in 2019 and another in Denmark later that year. An attempt to set up a similar cache in Poland was unsuccessful, authorities said.
