BAGHDAD,— Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi has moved to cancel a major Baghdad airport development project in the capital following corruption concerns, state media reported Sunday, citing a government source.
The scrapped deal was a $764 million contract awarded last year to a joint venture between Luxembourg-based Corporacion America Airports and Iraqi real estate company Amwaj International.
The contract covered upgrades and expansion of Baghdad International Airport.
Two government sources, speaking on condition of anonymity given the sensitivity of the matter, told Reuters that officials raised concerns about possible irregularities in the tendering process and contract terms.
The decision comes amid a broader anti-corruption drive that has brought growing scrutiny to government institutions across Iraq.
The airport project had been positioned as a key effort to modernize Iraq’s aviation sector and address years of underinvestment at the facility.
