ERBIL,— Erbil and Sulaimani airports in Iraq’s Kurdistan region, halted Iranian flights starting Friday, two sources told Reuters.
Iraq’s state news agency reported Friday that Najaf International Airport had also suspended the flights.
With these latest actions, three airports joined the shutdown Friday, and sources and state media said flights to and from Iran are now suspended at all four Iraqi airports that had handled them: Baghdad, Najaf, Erbil and Sulaimani.
This follows a similar step taken earlier in the week at another Iraqi airport.
Earlier in the week, two separate sources told Reuters that Iraq’s government had ordered its civil aviation authority to stop Iranian flights at Baghdad airport starting Wednesday.
At that time, the sources said officials were weighing whether to send Iranian flights to Najaf instead.
The United States had said it would place sanctions on companies worldwide that keep doing business with Iranian airlines after September 23. The goal, Washington said, is to ground Iran’s entire civilian aircraft fleet globally.
The United Arab Emirates, the Middle East’s biggest travel hub, said Thursday it was also halting all Iranian airline flights until further notice.
