Maliki rejects Trump’s interference in Iraq’s internal affairs
BAGHDAD,—Iraq’s former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said Wednesday that he rejects U.S. interference in Iraq’s internal affairs, following U.S. President Donald Trump’s threat to end support if Maliki were chosen as prime minister.
Maliki said in a post on X “We categorically reject the blatant U.S. interference in Iraq’s internal affairs and consider it a violation of its sovereignty, contrary to the democratic system in Iraq after 2003, and an encroachment on the Coordinating Framework’s decision to choose its candidate for the position of Prime Minister.
The language of dialogue between states is the only political option for engagement, and resorting to ultimatums and threats is unacceptable.
Out of respect for the national will and the Coordinating Framework’s decision, as guaranteed by the Iraqi constitution, I will continue to work until the end, in a way that serves the supreme interests of the Iraqi people.”
U.S. President Donald Trump on Tuesday warned that U.S. could end its support for Iraq if former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, a Shiite politician with close ties to Iran, returns to office.
Trump took to his social media platform Truth Social to say Iraq would make a “very bad choice” by reinstating Maliki, who was recently nominated for prime minister by the country’s largest Shiite bloc.
