ERBIL, Iraqi Kurdistan region,— A controversial fake audio recording, allegedly featuring Bafel Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), and his brother Qubad Talabani, a member of the PUK’s Political Bureau, has been released by media outlets affiliated with Masrour Barzani, Deputy Leader of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP).
The recording claims to reveal that Baghdad officials have “guaranteed” 30 parliamentary seats for the PUK in the upcoming Kurdistan elections.
On Tuesday, the KDP’s election oversight committee, responsible for the upcoming sixth session of Iraqi Kurdistan Parliament elections, released the audio clip. In the alleged conversation, Bafel Talabani tells his brother that officials in Baghdad have assured the PUK control over 30 seats and promised to remove “11 quota seats” from the parliament.
In the recording, Qubad Talabani allegedly says, “We need to make it look like we are legitimately earning those seats.” Bafel Talabani reportedly dismisses the need for popular support, using explicit language to express indifference toward Kurdish voters, including Peshmerga fighters.
However, experts have raised doubts about the recording’s authenticity. Several issues suggest it may have been fabricated, including the unnatural flow of conversation, which features no pauses and immediate responses.
Observers also note that while both Talabani brothers are bilingual, the conversation was entirely in English, something unusual given their frequent use of Kurdish in personal discussions. Linguists further noted that bilingual speakers typically mix languages, making the dialogue seem highly improbable.
Adding to the skepticism, the recording frequently uses the word “kaka” without any names or nicknames, a strange and unnatural choice for the Talabani brothers, who would typically use a mix of personal names and familiar terms.
According to technical specialists, the recording was likely generated using artificial intelligence (AI), a technology readily available online. “The poor quality of the fake recording points to amateurish work of KDP,” an expert told iKurd.net News, adding that the KDP appears to be trying to undermine the PUK ahead of the elections.
Masrour Barzani’s affiliated media outlet, Kurdistan24, published the recording and accompanying news story, intensifying the ongoing rivalry between the KDP and PUK as the region prepares for elections on October 20.
The KDP, facing declining popularity, appears to be using this fabricated audio to raise concerns about the integrity of the upcoming elections, potentially undermining trust in the process. With growing discontent toward the Barzani family in Iraqi Kurdistan, this move is seen by critics as an attempt to divert attention from their waning influence.
Qubad Talabani has voiced concerns regarding the tactics employed by the KDP in the upcoming elections. He emphasized that the KDP recognizes the impossibility of manipulating voters’ ballots this time, which has led them to resort to questionable strategies.
Speaking at an election rally in the Sangasar district of the Raparin administration on Tuesday, Talabani remarked, “The KDP is fully aware that they cannot manipulate the votes in these elections. As a result, they have chosen to distort my voice and that of Mr. Bafel. Recently, they circulated a fake audio recording, inaccurately suggesting that Mr. Bafel and I were engaged in a phone conversation.”
“This behavior demonstrates that the KDP is feeling defeated, anxious, and afraid of the electoral process. Aware that it cannot control the ballot boxes, it is now employing desperate measures, akin to a drowning person grasping at anything within reach. Nevertheless, our people are too informed and vigilant to be misled by such tactics.”
Last week, Bafel Talabani challenged Masrour Barzani of the KDP to a public debate ahead of the elections, but Barzani declined the offer.
As the election date approaches, campaigns are ramping up across the Kurdistan region, with political leaders hosting rallies and events to mobilize support. The KDP and PUK have historically dominated the political landscape in Iraqi Kurdistan, with the Barzani-led KDP controlling the Erbil and Duhok regions, and the Talabani-led PUK holding power in Sulaimani. Each party also maintains its own intelligence and security apparatus, adding to the complexity of the region’s politics.
Iraqi Kurdistan has long been accused of widespread corruption. Independent watchdogs and leaked documents suggest billions of dollars from oil revenues remain unaccounted for. Both the Barzani and Talabani families have been accused of using their political influence for personal gain, with both frequently facing allegations of corruption.
The Barzani family, often referred to by critics as “Kurdish oligarchs,” has been accused of amassing substantial wealth from the oil industry.
Massoud Barzani, the head of the Barzani tribe, continues to hold significant power behind the scenes, despite stepping down from formal leadership roles. His son, Masrour Barzani, currently serves as the Kurdistan region’s Prime Minister, while his nephew, Nechirvan Barzani, is the region’s President.
The upcoming parliamentary elections are shaping up to be a critical moment for the future of Iraqi Kurdistan, with both major political factions vying for control amid growing concerns over corruption and electoral manipulation.
