WASHINGTON,— U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Jordan’s King Abdullah on Monday, the State Department announced.
The call occurred two days after President Donald Trump suggested that Jordan and Egypt should take in more people from Gaza, a statement that has drawn strong reactions in the region.
During a campaign event on Saturday, Trump proposed a plan to “clean out” Gaza, sparking concerns among Gazans who fear permanent displacement from their homeland. The war-torn territory has faced widespread destruction and loss of life, with Israeli military operations killing tens of thousands, mostly Hamas militants, and triggering a dire humanitarian crisis.
Jordan and Egypt firmly rejected Trump’s remarks over the weekend, underscoring their opposition to absorbing large numbers of displaced Gazans. When asked if his suggestion was temporary or long-term, Trump responded, “Could be either.”
In Monday’s call, Secretary Rubio and King Abdullah discussed efforts to implement the Gaza ceasefire, secure the release of hostages, and establish long-term security in the region, according to the State Department. The statement did not reference Trump’s controversial comments.
“Secretary Rubio expressed gratitude to Jordan for its critical role in supporting the ceasefire and delivering humanitarian aid through the Jordan Corridor,” the department’s statement added.
The latest escalation in the Israeli-Gaza conflict began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas Islamist militants launched a deadly attack on Israel, killing 1,200 people—mostly civilians, including women and children—and taking roughly 250 hostages, with reports of sexual assaults against women, according to Israeli authorities.
