CHICAGO,— U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris was formally confirmed as the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee during a roll call vote at the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday night.
This confirmation comes after Harris had already secured enough delegates earlier this month to clinch the nomination.
The state of California, where Harris began her political career, played a pivotal role in her nomination. California cast 482 votes in her favor, solidifying her position as the nominee and concluding the ceremonial roll call.
California Governor Gavin Newsom praised Harris, stating, “The future unfolds in California first. Over the past two decades, I have witnessed that future take shape with Kamala Harris making a significant impact in Alameda County’s courtroom.”
On August 6, the Democratic National Committee officially declared Harris as the party’s presidential nominee following a five-day online voting process.
The Democratic National Convention, taking place at the United Center in Chicago from August 19 to August 22, is now in its second day.
The event has featured speeches from prominent Democrats such as former President Barack Obama, former First Lady Michelle Obama, and Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont.
On Tuesday evening, several protesters were arrested outside the Israeli Consulate in downtown Chicago. The previous day, thousands of demonstrators gathered near the United Center, with at least four individuals arrested for breaching a security barrier.
President Joe Biden delivered a keynote address on the first day of the convention, which lasted nearly an hour.
During his speech, he criticized former President Donald Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, and urged voters to support Harris in her campaign for the presidency.
In July 2024, amid growing pressure from his Democratic colleagues, President Joe Biden announced he would not seek re-election. Instead, he endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris as the Democratic candidate to face Republican Donald Trump in the November election.
