Pro-Iran groups pose significant risk to Iraq's security, U.S. says

WASHINGTON,— During a press briefing on Monday, U.S. State Department Spokesperson Matthew Miller responded to questions regarding escalating tensions between Israel and Iran-aligned Shiite militia groups in Iraq.

The Iraqi government had recently raised concerns with the United Nations Security Council, the Arab League, and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, urging international attention to the potential risks posed by these militias. Iraq also reached out to the U.S. to discuss the situation.

Miller explained that the U.S. has had ongoing discussions with the Iraqi government about the destabilizing influence of Iran-backed militia groups operating in Iraq. “Our position has been clear,” Miller said, emphasizing that these groups pose a significant risk to Iraq’s security and could drag the country into broader regional conflict.

He reiterated that unsanctioned attacks by these groups, both within Iraq and across its borders, are a major concern. The U.S. has a strong security partnership with Iraq and continues to advise the government on the dangers posed by these militias.

When asked whether Israel has the right to defend itself against such groups, Miller reaffirmed a basic principle of international relations: “Every country has the right to defend itself against terrorist attacks.”

However, he underscored the U.S. approach of diplomacy and deterrence to prevent the conflict from spreading, particularly to Iraq. He said, “We have told the Government of Iraq that it must take all necessary steps to prevent these kinds of attacks within its borders.”

The Iraqi government has also cited the U.S. commitment under the Strategic Framework Agreement (SFA), specifically referencing a section that mandates the U.S. to deter threats to Iraq’s security.

Miller was cautious when asked about the U.S. obligation under this agreement, choosing not to discuss specifics publicly. “We will keep discussing this matter with our Iraqi partners,” he said.

Amid ongoing tensions in the region, the U.S. State Department’s focus appears to be on preventing further escalation and ensuring that Iraq does not become a battleground for external conflicts.
