Open letter to the UN Secretary General, the UN Office on Genocide Prevention and the Responsibility to Protect and the UN Security Council: Requesting an immediate intervention to prevent Economic Genocide against the Kurds in Iraq.
December 5, 2020
To: His Excellency, António Guterres, Secretary-General, United Nations His Excellency, Adama Dieng, Special Adviser of the Secretary-General on the Prevention of Genocide, United Nations Office on Genocide Prevention and the Responsibility to Protect Her Excellency, Karen Smith, Special Adviser of the Secretary-General on the Responsibility to Protect, United Nations Office on Genocide Prevention and the Responsibility to Protect All members of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC).
Your Excellencies,
I am a human rights lawyer from Kurdistan Region-Iraq, writing to you to urge and request an intermediate intervention to stop the Economic Genocide against the population of the Kurdistan Region-Iraq.
The state of Iraq has a sad past of crimes of genocide against the Kurds, Christian, Yazidis and Jews, and the current government has cut the budget of the Kurdistan Region seven years ago, apparently as an attempt to starve its population, deliberately inflicting on the population conditions of life calculated to bring about their physical destruction in whole or part, using the endemic corruption within the government of the Kurdistan Region as a pretext to commit this crime, which constitutes a crime of genocide according to Article 2 (c) of the genocide convention, and a crime against humanity and collective punishment.
This pretext is legally unacceptable, since the federal government of Iraq had had several legal means and remedies to bring the suspects of corruption to justice, but has no right to collectively punish the population.
Your Excellencies,
The economic situation of the population in the Region is desperate with suicide rates rising dramatically among the poor and malnutrition is widespread.
I thank you for your attention
Sincerely,
Dr. Kamal Karim.
