Lavish Lifestyle of Idris Nechirvan Barzani Raises Questions Amidst Socioeconomic Disparities

NEW YORK,— In Iraqi Kurdistan, where the gap between opulence and deprivation continues to widen, the lavish lifestyle of Idris Nechirvan Barzani, the eldest son of President Nechirvan Barzani, has come under scrutiny.

Hailing from the influential Barzani clan, which has held power in the region for over three decades, Idris spares no expense in surrounding himself with extravagant opulence, leaving many to question the responsible use of wealth and power in a society grappling with socioeconomic disparities.

A leaked document obtained by iKurd News shed light on Idris’ exorbitant spending habits, revealing that he splurged a staggering $375,399 on two luxury watches in 2017 in U.S. These watches, the Vacheron Constantin 89010/000P-9935 Traditionnelle and the Vacheron Constantin 43076/000P-9875, serve as symbolic representations of his immense wealth and affluence. Furthermore, his penchant for branded clothing, high-end handbags, and prestigious leather goods demonstrates his desire to stand out with a unique style that oozes refinement and prestige.

One leaked document disclosed that Idris spent approximately $28,863 on clothes at a luxury store in the United States, Loro Piana, renowned for its exclusive Italian clothing and textile products. Another document suggests that he spent 62,050 AED around ($17,000) at Berluti, a prestigious leather shop in the United Arab Emirates known for its craftsmanship and use of exotic materials. While the exact figures from these documents may be subject to verification, they provide a glimpse into Idris’ excessive spending habits.

According to a close source, Idris has even established his own extravagant jewelry shop named H&Y at Empire Complex, which allegedly houses a collection of watches valued at millions of dollars, most of which are his personal possessions. While iKurd could not independently verify this claim, photographs on social media showcase Idris’ extensive collection of expensive watches.

In December 2021, Idris sold his shares in the International Bank of Kurdistan for over $35 million (39 billion Iraqi dinars), according to leaked documents published by the Iranian Kurdistan Human Rights Watch. This transaction highlights the substantial financial resources at Idris’ disposal.

Idris is not the only member of the Barzani family who indulges in a luxurious lifestyle. His cousin Areen, the eldest son of Kurdistan region’s Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, also partakes in extravagant spending, regularly showcasing his cars and expensive horses on social media. This further highlights the lavish tendencies of the younger generation within the Barzani clan.

While Idris’ and Areen’s lavish lifestyles serve as testaments to the immense wealth and power wielded by the Barzani clan, they also epitomize the glaring disparity between opulence and deprivation that exists within Iraqi Kurdistan. As the ordinary poor struggle to survive in an oil-rich region, the Barzanis continue to spend millions on luxury goods and properties worldwide.

Critics and observers have often accused the Barzani clan, known as the “Kurdish oligarchs,” of nepotism, corruption, and amassing vast wealth from the region’s oil business for the benefit of their own family, rather than serving the population. This extravagant display of wealth by Idris and Areen, along with their powerful positions within the government, further amplifies these concerns.

Tribal leader Massoud Barzani, remains the most powerful leader of Iraqi Kurdistan in the shadow according to analysts. Massoud’s son Masrour is the Kurdistan region’s prime minister and his nephew Nechirvan Barzani is the president of Kurdistan.

“To create a more equitable society, it is imperative that wealth and power be wielded responsibly, with consideration for the welfare of the larger community. Addressing the underlying causes of social inequality and working towards a fairer distribution of resources is essential for the development and prosperity of Iraqi Kurdistan,” iKurd’s political analyst Henase Karim says.
