PARIS,— Iranian Kurdish athlete Arian Salimi secured the gold medal in the men’s taekwondo heavyweight division (+80kg) on Saturday at the Paris 2024 Summer Olympic Games. Salimi, a 20-year-old from the Kurdish city of Kermanshan in western Iran, triumphed over Britain’s Caden Cunningham with a 2-1 win in the final match, bringing home the prestigious Olympic gold.
Cuba’s Rafael Alba and Ivory Coast’s Cheick Sallah Cisse each claimed bronze medals in this highly competitive category.
The victory sparked widespread celebration across Iran, with President Masoud Pezeshkian offering his heartfelt congratulations to Salimi. “Our beloved son Arian Salimi, your remarkable gold medal has rejuvenated our spirits. Iran’s first youth in the Olympics, you won the hearts of the people with a beautiful medal, may you always be proud,” Pezeshkian remarked in a message on X.
Salimi’s journey to Olympic gold has been marked by a series of significant achievements. He previously earned gold in the 87kg category at the 2024 Asian Games and claimed silver at the 2022 Asian Games. Additionally, Salimi secured gold at the 2022 World Taekwondo Grand Slam and took home a bronze medal at the 2023 World Taekwondo Championships held in Baku.
Iran’s taekwondo team also had a strong showing at the Paris Olympics, earning a total of four medals. Mobina Nematzadeh took bronze in the 49kg category, while Nahid Kiani and Mehran Barkhordari won silver in the 57kg and 80kg categories, respectively. Iran’s overall medal count at the Paris Games has reached ten, including three gold, five silver, and two bronze medals.
Despite this momentous achievement, Salimi’s victory highlights a broader context of Kurdish identity within Iran. The Kurdish community, which numbers over 12 million in Iranian Kurdistan, has faced long-standing challenges under the Islamic regime. Since the establishment of the regime in 1979, Kurdish people in Iran have encountered systemic discrimination across various aspects of life, including religious, economic, and cultural rights.
Kurdish parents, for example, are often prohibited from registering their children with traditional Kurdish names. Additionally, religious minorities within the Kurdish community have been subjected to measures designed to marginalize and isolate them further. Discrimination in access to employment, adequate housing, and political rights has led to entrenched poverty, exacerbating the marginalization of Kurds in Iranian society.
Arian Salimi’s victory at the Paris Olympics serves as a symbol of resilience and pride for the Kurdish community, shining a spotlight on both their talents and the ongoing struggles they face in Iran.
