BAGHDAD,— Iraq’s Ministry of Transportation has announced the long-awaited resumption of direct flights between Baghdad and Beijing.
The inaugural flight, which departed on Saturday afternoon, marks the end of a years-long suspension, the state-run Iraqi News Agency reported. This development is set to strengthen ties between the two nations.
According to the Ministry’s statement, Iraqi Airways will operate two weekly round-trip flights between Baghdad International Airport and Beijing Daxing International Airport. Manaf Abdul-Moneim, Director General of Iraqi Airways, described the resumption as a significant milestone that will foster enhanced cooperation between Iraq and China.
Initially slated for a May start, these flights are part of broader efforts to boost connectivity. Iraqi Airways currently operates direct flights to Guangzhou, another major Chinese city, which have contributed significantly to the burgeoning trade relations between the countries.
In 2023, the trade volume between Iraq and China surpassed $50 billion. Iraqi Ambassador to Beijing, Shoresh Khalid, projected this figure to exceed $55 billion in 2024, attributing part of this growth to the established air links.
China’s role as Iraq’s largest oil importer underscores the importance of these connections.
The reestablished air routes are expected to further cement economic and diplomatic relations, opening new avenues for collaboration.
In addition to the Beijing route, Iraqi Airways is also set to resume direct flights between Baghdad and Moscow.
These flights, which were halted in February due to operational challenges in Russia, will recommence on July 16, 2024. The service will run twice weekly, on Saturdays and Tuesdays, with the potential for additional flights depending on demand, as stated by Abdul-Moneim.
The reinstatement of these routes highlights Iraq’s commitment to expanding its international aviation network, facilitating greater economic engagement, and enhancing bilateral ties.
These developments are anticipated to provide a significant boost to both passenger travel and trade, underscoring the strategic importance of robust air connectivity in fostering international partnerships.
