ERBIL,— Kurdistan Democratic Party bloc in the Iraqi Parliament on Wednesday said it will resume parliamentary activities in Baghdad, calling the move an expression of legal and national responsibility.
The Barzanis’ KDP had been boycotting parliament indefinitely over the presidential vote.
Nizar Amedi, backed by the rival Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, was elected Iraqi president on April 11, 2026, with 227 votes in a second-round ballot, securing a simple majority in the 329-seat chamber.
The KDP had opposed his candidacy and promoted its own nominee, Fuad Hussein, for the presidency.
A party statement said the decision followed what it described as a positive understanding among political parties, after the visit of the designated prime minister tasked with forming the new government, together with a high level coordination delegation from the Kurdistan Region, and wide-ranging discussions with KDP leadership.
It also cited a visit by a KDP negotiating delegation to Baghdad aimed at reaching what it called a fundamental solution as another reason for the return.
KDP lawmaker Ashwaq Jaf told Channel8 TV that a delegation from the Coordination Framework and the appointed prime minister of Iraq, who recently visited Erbil, asked the KDP faction to return to Baghdad. She added that following pledges to implement the constitution and respect political balance, the faction agreed to return.
Jaf said the decision also covers KDP ministers in the Iraqi government. Several ministers attended the regular session of the Council of Ministers on Tuesday.
The bloc said its return is intended to allow closer parliamentary oversight of agreements linked to constitutional, legal, and financial rights. It stressed that its legislative and oversight role aims to protect constitutional rights of Iraqis and the people of the Kurdistan Region and to reinforce partnership in state governance.
The statement reiterated commitment to the constitutional framework and said the bloc would continue cooperation within Iraq’s political process while carrying out its parliamentary and oversight duties in Baghdad in line with agreements reached among political parties and relevant institutions.
