TEHRAN,— In a decisive victory on Saturday, moderate candidate Masoud Pezeshkian urged the Iranian people to join him on the challenging path forward after defeating his hardline opponent in Iran’s presidential runoff.
The runoff election on Friday saw Pezeshkian, the lone moderate among four candidates, pitted against Saeed Jalili, a hardline former nuclear negotiator.
Pezeshkian, a 69-year-old cardiac surgeon, has outlined his commitment to pursuing a practical foreign policy, easing tensions surrounding the stalled negotiations to revive the 2015 nuclear agreement with major powers, and advancing social liberalization and political pluralism.
Despite his promises, skepticism remains among many Iranians regarding his ability to fulfill these pledges, given that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei holds ultimate authority in Iran, not the president.
Addressing the nation via the social media platform X, Pezeshkian expressed gratitude and emphasized unity in facing the challenges ahead. “Dear people of Iran, the election has concluded, marking the beginning of our collaboration. A tough road lies ahead, one that can only be navigated smoothly with your cooperation, empathy, and trust,” he affirmed. “I extend my hand to you and pledge on my honor that I will stand by you throughout this journey. Do not abandon me, and I will not abandon you.”
The runoff vote saw nearly 50% turnout, a notable increase from the historically low participation in the first round on June 28, which saw over 60% abstention. The election followed the tragic death of President Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash in May.
Pezeshkian’s victory primarily drew support from the urban middle class and youth, demographics disillusioned by years of stringent security measures that suppressed public dissent from the Islamic orthodox establishment. Celebratory scenes spread across social media, depicting supporters celebrating in streets and motorists honking horns in jubilation across various cities and towns.
His win has sparked hopes for a potential thaw in Iran’s relations with Western nations, offering prospects for resolving the nuclear dispute with global powers. This optimism comes amid heightened regional tensions exacerbated by conflicts involving Iranian allies Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, as well as increased international pressure on Iran over its advancing nuclear activities.
In Iran’s dual system of clerical and republican governance, the president holds limited authority over critical state matters such as Iran’s nuclear policy and support for Middle Eastern militia groups. Ultimate decisions rest with Supreme Leader Khamenei. However, the president’s influence extends to setting the tone of Iran’s policies and playing a pivotal role in selecting Khamenei’s successor, given the leader’s advanced age of 85.
Aligned with Iran’s reformist faction under former President Mohammad Khatami, Pezeshkian remains committed to Iran’s theocratic principles and avoids direct confrontation with influential security hardliners and clerical authorities.
Looking ahead, the international community will closely monitor Pezeshkian’s presidency for any shifts in Iran’s domestic and foreign policies, particularly regarding nuclear negotiations and regional dynamics. As Iranians brace for the future under new leadership, uncertainties and expectations loom large both domestically and on the global stage.
