CAIRO,— Renowned Egyptian actor Nabil Al-Halafawy died on Sunday at the age of 77 following complications from a respiratory illness, according to hospital sources and his family.

Al-Halafawy, who had been receiving intensive care, succumbed to his condition after a sharp decline in health in his final hours, the family confirmed.

Born in 1947 in the Sayeda Zeinab district of Cairo, Al-Halafawy rose to prominence over a five-decade career that left an indelible mark on Egyptian theater, television, and film.

His journey into acting began during his university years on the stage of the Faculty of Commerce theater. Despite familial opposition to his career choice, he pursued his passion, enrolling at the Higher Institute of Theatrical Arts and graduating in the 1970s.

Al-Halafawy’s career began with small roles in the 1970s, but his talent quickly gained recognition. He first garnered widespread attention in the 1980 television series Mohammad, Messenger of God. Over the years, he became a household name through performances in acclaimed TV shows such as Al-Ziny Barakat, Zizinia, Raafat Al-Hagan, and King Farouk.

On the big screen, Al-Halafawy delivered memorable roles in films like The Road to Eilat, The Assassination of a Teacher, Lady of Cairo, and The Trial. His final film appearance was in the 2022 comedy Taslim Ahaly, directed by his son, Khaled Al-Halafawy, and starring Donia Samir Ghanem and Dalal Abdel Aziz.

In addition to his work on screen, Al-Halafawy made significant contributions to the stage, performing in plays such as The Mufti, Al-Zeer Salem, and Laugh Until You Die, his last theatrical role in 2018.

Known for his depth and versatility, Al-Halafawy’s work often explored social and historical themes, collaborating with prominent writers and directors of his time. His ability to bring authenticity to his roles won him critical acclaim and admiration from audiences.

Al-Halafawy’s family and colleagues remembered him as not only an exceptional artist but also a man of strong principles and kindness. Funeral arrangements have not yet been announced.

In October 2024, Mustafa Fahmy, another celebrated Egyptian actor, passed away at the age of 82 after a courageous battle with cancer. That same month, Egyptian cinema icon Hassan Youssef, known for his decades of contributions to the industry, died at the age of 90.
