TEHRAN,— A court in Tehran has sentenced Iranian Kurdish actress Shohra Qemer to four years and eight months in prison, her lawyer said, amid government crackdowns on dissent linked to the nationwide protests sparked by the death of a young Kurdish woman in 2022 after she was arrested for not wearing a hijab, Firat News Agency reported.

According to attorney Ali Sharif Zade Erkani, the ruling was issued on April 13 by the Tehran Revolutionary Court.

Qemer, originally from Sine (Sanandaj) in Iranian Kurdistan (Rojhelat), was convicted on charges of allegedly supporting Israel, spreading misinformation tied to the “Jin, Jiyan, Azadi” (Woman, Life, Freedom) movement, and threatening national security. Erkani stated that the verdict is being appealed.

The actress was detained by Iranian intelligence forces on August 5, 2023, without a formal arrest warrant. She was held in Evin Prison for 45 days before being released on bail. The facility is known for its harsh conditions and treatment of political prisoners.

Before this case, Qemer had already received a 15-month prison sentence for expressing support for the “Jin, Jiyan, Azadi” protests, which began following the death of Jina Mahsa Amini in the custody of Iran’s morality police on September 16, 2022.

That incident ignited widespread demonstrations, particularly in Iranian Kurdistan, which later spread across the country and gained international attention through social media.

Since the establishment of the Islamic Republic in 1979, Kurdish communities in Iran have reported systemic discrimination across political, economic and cultural spheres.

Human rights groups have noted that Kurdish citizens often face restrictions in naming their children, practicing their religion, and accessing employment and housing.

Roughly 12 million Kurds live in Iranian Kurdistan, a region where Kurdish identity and language remain heavily regulated.
