Why are Jews so wealthy?

NEW YORK,— Jews, who make up a very small share of the world’s population, are consistently overrepresented in measures of wealth and economic success, according to surveys and published reports.

Despite numbering only about 15 million worldwide, Jewish individuals frequently appear among the richest people globally and in the United States, with income levels that surpass national averages.

In 2025, Forbes magazine reported that five of the world’s ten richest individuals were of Jewish descent.

The list included Meta chief executive Mark Zuckerberg, Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, Google’s Sergey Brin and Larry Page, and former Microsoft leader Steve Ballmer. For a worldwide population of roughly 15 million, the numbers are striking.

The concentration is not limited to billionaires. Jews represent less than 2 percent of the U.S. population, yet they consistently account for about 20 percent of Forbes’ list of the 400 richest Americans.

Surveys also show that more than half of Jewish households in the United States report incomes above $100,000, compared with 19 percent of households nationwide.

Researchers point to history as an explanation for these patterns. Centuries of displacement, legal restrictions, and persecution shaped a community that emphasized trade, finance, education, and internal solidarity as survival strategies.

The expulsion of Jews from Jerusalem in the second century under Emperor Hadrian began a long period of dispersal.

By the Middle Ages, Jewish families had migrated to Western and Central Europe, where they encountered new restrictions.

Laws barred them from farming, holding public office, or joining guilds. Entire communities were expelled from England in 1290, France in 1394, Spain in 1492, and Portugal in 1497.

Denied land ownership, Jews concentrated in occupations that were portable and resistant to confiscation. Trade across borders became one such pursuit. Jewish merchants often spoke multiple languages and maintained networks stretching from Amsterdam to Cairo. Trade in high-value goods such as spices, silk, and diamonds flourished under this system.

Because transactions often relied on trust, close-knit Jewish networks offered security. A merchant who violated agreements risked exclusion from future trade, a form of social enforcement stronger than courts of the time.

Finance and Lending

Restrictions also opened the way for Jewish participation in money lending. The Catholic Church prohibited interest-based loans, calling them usury, but Jewish tradition permitted lending with interest under fair conditions. This made Jewish financiers essential to commerce and monarchies throughout Europe.

Banking families provided loans to rulers, exchanged currencies, and financed trade, but they also became targets of taxation and confiscation. Expulsions were sometimes linked to unpaid royal debts. Still, these financial activities gave Jews a reputation for expertise that carried into modern economies.

Community Support

Historians say another factor has been strong internal support structures. Jewish teachings stress mutual responsibility, known as “arvut,” where community members are expected to help one another. Local charities provided food, education, interest-free loans, and burial services. Wealthier families funded schools and assisted poorer members to establish businesses.

This support system created pathways for social mobility. Young entrepreneurs often relied on family or community networks instead of external lenders, who might discriminate against them. Religious practices such as gathering a quorum of ten men for prayer also facilitated networking and new business contacts.

Education as Central Value

Education has been described as the most consistent cultural focus. Jewish children are traditionally introduced to reading and study at an early age. Religious instruction emphasizes questioning, debate, and analysis of texts such as the Talmud. These skills translated into strengths in modern professions like law, science, medicine, and finance.

A Pew Research Center study found Jews to be the most educated religious group in the world, with an average of more than 13 years of schooling. By comparison, Hindus and Muslims average fewer than six years. This emphasis has also produced a disproportionate share of Nobel Prize winners across fields from literature to economics.

Financial education within families is also emphasized. Parents often teach children to save, invest, and avoid unnecessary consumer spending. The cultural message is to build lasting wealth rather than pursue short-term gains.

Different Views of Wealth

Cultural attitudes toward wealth also differ. While some religious traditions cast money as a spiritual burden, Judaism often frames wealth as a blessing and responsibility.

Texts such as Proverbs contain financial advice, and wealth is associated with the ability to support family and community. Poverty is treated as a condition to overcome through work and perseverance.

Resilience and Adaptability

Persecution in the twentieth century, including the Holocaust, reinforced the importance of solidarity and rebuilding.

Survivors who resettled in North America, Israel, and Europe prioritized savings, education, and entrepreneurship. Communities that had endured repeated displacement were already accustomed to rapid adaptation in new settings.

Historians note that this adaptability has proven valuable in a modern economy defined by constant change. From Amsterdam to New York, Jewish migrants adjusted to local laws and markets quickly, often becoming early participants in new industries.

Broader Patterns

Not all Jews are wealthy, and poverty exists in many communities. But data consistently shows higher average outcomes compared with national populations. Analysts link these results to a combination of historical circumstances, cultural practices, and intergenerational transfer of values.

While the debate continues about the reasons, the statistics are clear. A community that has faced centuries of exclusion has, in many places, transformed those barriers into distinctive strengths.
