WASHINGTON,— U.S. President Donald Trump said Tuesday he agreed to suspend military strikes on Iran for two weeks after accepting a 14-day truce proposal put forward by mediators in the conflict.
Trump said he held talks with leaders in Pakistan, which has acted as a mediator between Washington and Tehran and had called for a temporary ceasefire.
In a social media post, Trump said the request came from Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Field Marshal Asim Munir. He said they asked him to delay planned military action against Iran.
Trump added that the pause would depend on Iran agreeing to fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz in a safe and immediate way.
He described the arrangement as a “double sided ceasefire.”
Trump also said the United States had received a 10-point proposal from Iran, which he called a workable basis for negotiations.
He said most key issues between the two sides had already been resolved and the two-week period would allow time to finalize an agreement.
Trump repeated that he believed U.S. objectives in the conflict had been achieved, after earlier giving shifting goals and timelines for the war.
The conflict began on February 28, 2026 when U.S. and Israeli forces launched airstrikes on Iran. Tehran responded with attacks targeting Israel and Gulf countries hosting U.S. military bases.
The fighting has affected global markets and pushed oil prices higher.
Earlier on Tuesday, Trump warned that severe consequences could follow if Iran did not reach a deal.
In a separate interview, Trump told AFP that the United States had achieved a “total and complete victory” following the ceasefire agreement.
“Total and complete victory. 100 percent,” Trump said in a brief phone call with the news agency.
He repeated that the Iranian proposal provided a basis for talks.
When asked about earlier threats to target Iran’s civilian infrastructure if negotiations failed, Trump declined to give details, saying the outcome would be seen later, AFP reported.
Trump also said that Iran’s nuclear material would be addressed under any agreement, though he did not explain how this would be handled.
He again said U.S. goals in the conflict had been met.
