Barzani Family: From Humble Beginnings to Billionaire Empire
ERBIL, —The Barzani family, who have ruled Iraqi Kurdistan for over three decades, has risen from poverty to immense wealth, wielding significant power and influence over the region’s resources. Critics accuse the family, led by Massoud Barzani and his descendants, of leveraging their political dominance to consolidate their fortunes while ordinary citizens face enduring economic hardships.
Historical accounts indicate that the Barzanis struggled to make ends meet during their time in Karaj, Iran, before their fortunes changed following the Kurdish uprising in the 1990s. Today, the family controls extensive business interests, including oil fields, refineries, and other enterprises. Allegations of illicit trade and money laundering have further clouded their financial dealings.

Despite widespread economic challenges in the Kurdistan Region—delayed salaries, unemployment, and poor public services—the Barzani family enjoys extravagant lifestyles. Foundations associated with the family distribute limited aid, but many view this as a symbolic gesture. Meanwhile, the family resides in luxury akin to global elites, with private jets, opulent villas, and international properties.
Massoud Barzani, the family patriarch and former president of the Kurdistan Region, has faced scrutiny over his financial ties. Turkish newspaper Yeni Şafak reported in 2017 that he owned 400 companies in Turkey, raising questions about his alignment with Turkey’s economy instead of prioritizing Iraq and Kurdistan.
Masrour Barzani, his eldest son and current prime minister, has expanded the family’s empire. Allegations tie him to ownership of the Cavin Group, which operates in Turkish-controlled areas, along with luxury real estate in the United States, Europe, and the Arab world. He is also said to own a hospital in Virginia catering to international clients.

Meanwhile, Masrour’s son, Areen Barzani, has begun to establish his own ventures despite his young age.
Notably, observers question the sudden wealth of individuals linked to the family’s circle. Some point to how certain female models, once unknown, have reportedly become owners of luxury cars, mansions, and international businesses. This raises concerns about the opaque nature of financial dealings and the disparities between the family’s affluence and the region’s widespread poverty.
Nechirvan Barzani, the region’s president and Massoud’s nephew, maintains similar wealth and influence. His interests include companies in Turkey, a private bank, and a university in Iraqi Kurdistan. Even his son, Idris, has become one of the wealthiest young individuals in the region, further solidifying the family’s financial empire.

The Barzanis’ wealth extends to other relatives, including Idris Barzani’s sons, who have invested in construction projects, private institutions, and other ventures. Critics claim the family withdraws over a billion dollars annually for personal and promotional use, further widening the gap between their wealth and the struggles of ordinary citizens.
While the Barzanis present themselves as defenders of Kurdish identity, the growing inequality in the region raises questions about their legacy. As scrutiny intensifies, many Kurds wonder if the region’s resources will ever be equitably shared to benefit all.
