DUBAI,— Emirates Airlines has introduced a new policy prohibiting the transportation of pagers and walkie-talkies on its flights. The decision comes in the wake of last month’s incidents involving explosive communication devices linked to pro-Iran Shiite Hezbollah group.
In a statement released on Friday, the airline emphasized that passengers flying to, from, or through Dubai are not allowed to carry pagers or walkie-talkies in either their checked or carry-on luggage. Emirates further stated that any such items discovered will be confiscated by Dubai Police as part of enhanced security protocols.
This move follows the deadly September attacks in which Hezbollah devices, including thousands of pagers and radios, were rigged with explosives.
While Israel has been widely accused of the attacks, it has not officially taken responsibility.
As part of its ongoing adjustments, Emirates Airlines has also confirmed that flights to Iraq and Iran will remain grounded until Tuesday.
However, flights to Jordan are set to resume this Sunday. Services to Lebanon, however, are on hold until at least October 15, 2024, due to escalating Israeli military action against Hezbollah, including strikes near Beirut’s airport.
Several other airlines have similarly suspended flights to Beirut and nearby airports amid rising regional tensions, further disrupting travel in the Middle East.
Hezbollah has escalated its missile attacks on northern Israel, prompting mass evacuations of civilians from the region. These strikes are part of the broader conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, the latter being designated as a terrorist organization by several countries worldwide.
The Shiite group’s activities have contributed to heightened tensions across the Middle East, further destabilizing the region.
