Iraq launches 5G service through new state-run mobile company

BAGHDAD,— Iraq signed an agreement on Sunday to establish a new state-owned mobile phone operator called The National Mobile Phone Company, which will provide fifth-generation (5G) services nationwide, according to a statement from the office of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani.

Al-Sudani presided over the signing ceremony for the incorporation of the National Mobile Phone Company, the statement said.

The move comes amid growing frustration among Iraqis over poor service quality from existing telecom providers, including Asiacell, Zain (Atheer), and Korek. These companies have long faced criticism for frequent network outages and slow internet speeds.

The government said the new company aims to improve digital infrastructure and create competition in a sector dominated by private firms.

The service will introduce ultra-fast internet speeds and low-latency connectivity, enabling advanced technologies and improving user experience.

Officials said the initiative is part of Iraq’s strategy to modernize its telecommunications sector and strengthen the digital economy.

The new network is expected to enhance service quality, create competition, and support economic diversification. High-speed connectivity will support startups and digital transformation in both public and private sectors.

The government described the project as a strategic step toward ending years of underinvestment in telecom infrastructure and creating opportunities for technology-driven growth.

Minister of Communications Hayam al-Yasiri told Al-Iraqiya News Agency INA that the company will generate significant revenues for the state and reduce dependence on oil income.

“This is an economically viable project that will increase non-oil revenues,” al-Yasiri said. “It reflects the government’s efforts to diversify income sources.”

According to the minister, hundreds of young graduates from various fields will be hired to manage operations across all provinces after completing training programs.

The ministry plans to work with Vodafone under a training contract to prepare local talent for the project.

Al-Yasiri said the company will use 5G technology to deliver high-speed internet services and support sectors such as artificial intelligence, remote learning, telemedicine, and digital transformation.

“The ministry is finalizing preparations to launch the project soon,” al-Yasiri added. “This initiative will enhance competition and provide high-quality services at competitive prices.”

The government emphasized that profits from the new operator will go directly to the state treasury.
