Sulaimani leads Iraqi Kurdistan in marriages and divorces in 2024

ERBIL,— Iraqi Kurdistan Region’s Judicial Council has released on Tuesday its 2024 court statistics, detailing marriage, divorce, and second-wife approval cases across Erbil, Sulaimani, Duhok, and Kirkuk-Garmiyan.

In 2024, Sulaimani recorded the highest number of marriages and divorces in the region, according to the report.

According to the report published Tuesday, courts in the region processed a total of 51,018 marriage cases and 12,348 divorce cases throughout the year.

The council also reported 98 cases of second-wife approvals, including 45 in Erbil, 19 in Sulaimani, and 34 in Duhok.

A comparison with 2023 figures showed slight fluctuations across cities. Marriage cases increased by 48 in Erbil and 88 in Kirkuk-Garmiyan, while Sulaimani recorded a decline of 1,905 cases and Duhok saw a decrease of 300 cases.

City Breakdown

Erbil: 17,591 marriages, 3,877 divorces, 45 second-wife approvals
Sulaimani: 18,522 marriages, 5,745 divorces, 19 second-wife approvals
Kirkuk-Garmiyan: 2,706 marriages, 728 divorces, 0 second-wife approvals
Duhok: 12,199 marriages, 2,033 divorces, 34 second-wife approvals

The Judicial Council’s statistics provide insight into demographic and social trends in Iraqi Kurdistan Region’s court system.
