WASHINGTON,—A meeting between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and U.S. President Donald Trump ended in discord Friday after a heated exchange over Ukraine’s war effort, U.S. support, and diplomatic strategy.
The Oval Office discussion, intended to strengthen ties, quickly turned tense as Trump and Vice President JD Vance pressed Zelensky on peace negotiations with Russia.
Zelensky, who had come seeking continued U.S. aid, faced skepticism from Trump’s team, leading to an abrupt end to the talks and a major minerals agreement left unsigned.
A U.S. official confirmed that Zelensky and his delegation were asked to leave the White House after the meeting collapsed, underscoring a dramatic shift in U.S. policy toward Kyiv.
A Heated Exchange in the Oval Office
The meeting started with Zelensky outlining Ukraine’s battlefield situation and emphasizing that negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin were impossible. He urged continued military assistance, arguing that cutting support would embolden Moscow.
Vance, however, pushed for a diplomatic approach. “The best path forward is diplomacy,” he said, suggesting Ukraine consider a settlement.
Zelensky, visibly frustrated, challenged the notion. “What kind of diplomacy are you talking about, JD?” he asked.
“The kind that stops the destruction of your country,” Vance replied.
Trump then interjected, taking a blunt stance. “You’re losing. We’ve given you billions, and yet you still ask for more,” he said. “You need to wake up to reality.”
As the conversation grew tense, Trump insisted Zelensky should focus on negotiating peace. “You need to say, ‘I want to make peace,’” he said.
Zelensky refused to agree, warning that any deal with Russia would be on Putin’s terms. Trump, however, dismissed his concerns. “Putin wants a deal. He’s ready,” he said.
The discussion escalated when Vance criticized Zelensky’s attitude. “You didn’t even say thank you,” Vance remarked.
“I have thanked the American people many times,” Zelensky replied.
Trump, unimpressed, leaned forward. “You’re playing cards with millions of lives. This is not a game,” he said.
Zelensky Ordered to Leave
With the discussion at an impasse, Trump decided to end the meeting. According to a U.S. official, he directed his aides to inform the Ukrainian delegation that the talks were over. White House staff, preparing to serve lunch, were caught off guard as Zelensky and his team were asked to leave.
A major minerals agreement that Ukraine had hoped to finalize remained unsigned. The deal was seen as crucial for strengthening U.S.-Ukraine economic ties and securing Republican support for military aid. However, Trump signaled he was uninterested in revisiting the agreement.
“You’re either making a deal, or we’re out,” Trump reportedly told Zelensky. “And if we’re out, you’re fighting this war alone.”
Trump Reacts Publicly
Shortly after the meeting, Trump posted a statement on Truth Social.
“I have determined that President Zelensky is not ready for Peace if America is involved. He can come back when he is ready for Peace,” he wrote.
Speaking later to reporters as he departed the White House for Florida, Trump doubled down. “He’s got to stop saying ‘Putin this, Putin that.’ That’s not how you make a deal,” he said.
Europe Backs Zelensky
The fallout from the meeting sparked swift reactions from European leaders. German chancellor candidate Friedrich Merz warned, “We must never confuse aggressor and victim in this war.”
Zelensky held calls with French President Emmanuel Macron, NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, and European Council President Antonio Costa to discuss the consequences of the meeting.
Britain is set to host a summit on Sunday, where Zelensky will meet with European leaders to discuss alternative security guarantees, as the future of U.S. aid remains uncertain.
Implications for Ukraine’s War Effort
With Russia controlling 20% of Ukraine’s territory and continuing its advances, the loss of U.S. support could have significant consequences. While Ukraine has ramped up domestic weapons production, it remains heavily reliant on foreign military aid.
Trump, however, signaled a shift in U.S. priorities. “I want to be remembered as a peacemaker,” he told reporters. “This war needs to end.”
While acknowledging the bravery of Ukrainian soldiers, he suggested that U.S. funds should be redirected. “We’ve spent billions, and we should use that money differently,” he said.
Ukraine Stands Firm
Following the meeting, Ukraine’s top military commander, General Oleksandr Syrskyi, posted on Telegram, reaffirming the country’s commitment to defending its territory. “Ukraine’s strength lies in unity,” he wrote.
Zelensky, asked in an interview with Fox News whether relations with Trump could still be repaired, responded cautiously. “Yes, of course,” he said. “I’m sorry for this.”
Future of U.S.-Ukraine Relations Uncertain
The Oval Office clash marked a significant turning point in U.S.-Ukraine relations. Trump’s approach indicates a departure from the policies of the Biden administration, raising questions about the future of American support.
With key U.S. aid now in doubt, Kyiv faces the challenge of securing alternative backing. The path forward remains unclear, but Trump made one thing certain: Ukraine can no longer assume unconditional U.S. support without considering a negotiated end to the war.
