ZURICH, Switzerland,— Fans of Zakho Sports Club in Iraqi Kurdistan region have been honored with the 2025 FIFA Fan Award, recognized for a humanitarian gesture that captured international attention.

FIFA said the award was given to the supporters in appreciation of their efforts to aid children facing illnesses and for creating a visually and emotionally striking moment during a domestic league match.

The gesture occurred on May 13 during Zakho’s Iraqi Stars League clash against Al-Hudood, when thousands of toys and children’s gifts were thrown onto the pitch before kickoff.

The items were collected and later distributed to sick children, turning the match into a remarkable display of compassion and solidarity.

In a statement, Zakho Sports Club described the act as a “model humanitarian spirit” that has been widely recognized by the sports community in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq, and across Asia.

The club highlighted its supporters as the backbone of the team, noting that their creative initiatives continue to draw attention both locally and internationally.

Kurdish political figures congratulated the club and its fans on the achievement. Massoud Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) praised the supporters for their efforts.

Barzani personally called Guhdar Sheikho, head of Zakho’s independent administration, on Tuesday to commend the club for winning the global award.

Bafel Talabani, President of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), also extended congratulations to Zakho Sports Club, emphasizing the role of Kurdish unity in the victory.

Talabani said the success reflected “the consensus and unity of the Kurdish people for this dear club” and highlighted that the accomplishment shows what can be achieved through cooperation.

Kurdistan Region caretaker Prime Minister Masrour Barzani joined in recognizing the fans’ contribution.

He congratulated Zakho supporters and thanked everyone who participated in the FIFA voting process, stating, “Congratulations to the passionate fans of Zakho FC on winning FIFA’s Best Fan Award. Thank you to everyone who voted. This is a great win for sports and for sports fans across Kurdistan region and Iraq.”

Kurdistan region President Nechirvan Barzani also congratulated the fans of Zakho SC.

In a statement, he warmly congratulated the fans on this outstanding achievement, noting that their dedication has earned them recognition from FIFA as some of the most remarkable and influential supporters worldwide.

He added that this honor celebrates not only Zakho but also brings pride to the sports community across the Kurdistan Region and Iraq.

The FIFA Fan Award, established in 2016, honors exceptional expressions of commitment and creativity from football fans, regardless of league, nationality, or gender. Nominations can recognize individuals, groups, or moments that resonate with the global football community.

The 2025 award finalists were selected by a panel of FIFA Legends and football experts, while the final winner was determined through public voting on FIFA’s official website.

Voters ranked their top three choices, with points allocated accordingly. Zakho SC fans edged out two other nominees to secure the award, receiving the highest overall score.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino acknowledged the fans’ gesture in an Instagram post, praising their generosity and emphasizing how football can unite communities. He described the moment of thousands of toys being thrown onto the field as “heartwarming” and inspiring, highlighting its significance for the sport worldwide.

The initiative has garnered international recognition, solidifying Zakho Sports Club’s place in FIFA history for its landmark humanitarian contribution. Beyond the football field, the effort has showcased the potential of sports fans to effect positive change in their communities, highlighting how collective action can benefit vulnerable children in need.

The award-winning moment remains a source of pride for the people of Kurdistan, demonstrating that thoughtful, organized fan engagement can transcend sports and have real-world impact.

In July 2025, Duhok Sports Club claimed its first Iraq Football Cup title after defeating Zakho in the final.
