OTTAWA,— Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Monday he will step down as Liberal Party leader after nearly a decade in office. His decision follows mounting public dissatisfaction, internal party unrest, and the surprise resignation of key cabinet members, including Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland. Trudeau, 53, plans to remain prime minister until the Liberals elect a new leader ahead of an expected spring election.

Speaking outside his official residence, Trudeau said he could no longer effectively lead the Liberals in the next election due to internal divisions.

“This role has always been about putting Canadians and democracy first,” Trudeau said, his voice cracking with emotion. “While I never shy away from a fight, this decision is for the good of the party and the country.”

The announcement came amid a contentious backdrop. Trudeau’s government has faced criticism over rising living costs, immigration, and a series of scandals. The political climate further deteriorated after Freeland, who also served as deputy prime minister, resigned last month, citing policy disagreements and economic concerns.

Freeland opposed Trudeau’s recent proposals, including a sales tax holiday and cash rebates for citizens, calling them “fiscally irresponsible” as Canada faces potential trade disputes with the United States.

Trump’s Threats Add Pressure

Compounding Trudeau’s troubles are heightened tensions with Washington. U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to impose a 25% tariff on Canadian goods, citing concerns about immigration and drug trafficking into the U.S. “If Canada wants to keep benefiting from us, they need to fix their problems,” Trump posted on social media, referring to Canada as the “51st state.” He also falsely claimed that Trudeau’s resignation was tied to U.S. financial subsidies.

Canada, a major exporter of oil, gas, steel, and automobiles to the U.S., has found itself increasingly at odds with Trump’s administration. Freeland, in her resignation letter, warned of a looming “tariff war,” emphasizing the need for prudent economic planning.

Opposition Seizes the Moment

Trudeau’s decision sets the stage for a fierce political battle. Parliament, which was set to reconvene January 27, will remain suspended until March 24 to allow the Liberals to select a new leader. Opposition leaders have signaled plans to topple Trudeau’s minority government through a no-confidence vote, likely triggering a spring election.

Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre accused Trudeau’s administration of “breaking the country” and said a new Liberal leader would make no difference. “Canadians are desperate to turn the page on this dark chapter,” Poilievre said in a video message. New Democratic Party leader Jagmeet Singh echoed the sentiment, stating, “The Liberals have failed Canadians time and again. It doesn’t matter who leads them.”

Despite widespread criticism, Trudeau’s allies praised his legacy. Liberal Party President Sachit Mehra called him a “transformational leader,” citing achievements like $10-a-day childcare, dental care, and a national climate plan.

A Complicated Legacy

Trudeau, who rose to power in 2015, was once celebrated as a progressive leader who revived Canada’s liberal traditions. He championed diversity, gender equality, and environmental policies, including a carbon tax. However, his tenure has been marred by scandals and declining public trust.

Under his leadership, Canada navigated the COVID-19 pandemic with relatively low mortality rates and substantial financial aid. Yet opposition to vaccine mandates fueled resentment, especially in rural areas, where anti-Trudeau banners became a common sight.

Trudeau’s personal and political journey often drew comparisons to his father, Pierre Trudeau, who served as prime minister for nearly 16 years. Justin Trudeau, a former teacher and snowboard instructor, initially captured international attention with his charisma and youthful appeal. However, his popularity waned as economic and political challenges mounted.

Recent polls show the Liberals trailing the Conservatives by more than 20 points, underscoring the steep hurdles ahead for Trudeau’s successor. “His silence in recent weeks signaled the end was near,” said Daniel Béland, a political science professor at McGill University.

As Trudeau exits, Canada braces for a pivotal election that will determine the country’s direction in an increasingly uncertain political and economic landscape.
